bag
A soft container used to carry or hold things.
To bag something means to catch it, get it, or put it in a bag. When hunters bag a deer, they've successfully hunted it. When a shopper bags groceries, they're placing items into bags at checkout. You might bag leaves in autumn by raking them into large paper sacks.
The word often suggests achievement or completion. A mountain climber who bags a peak has successfully reached its summit. When you bag a good grade on a test, you've gotten the result you wanted. Baseball announcers might say a runner bagged second base after a successful steal.
A bag itself is a flexible container, usually made of paper, plastic, cloth, or leather, used for carrying things. Students carry backpacks (bags worn on the back), travelers pack duffel bags, and shoppers bring reusable bags to the store.
The phrase in the bag means something is certain or assured, like when your team has such a big lead that victory is in the bag. If someone tells you to bag it, they're saying to forget about something or give it up. And when you're left holding the bag, you're stuck with responsibility for something that others have abandoned.
