Bamboo is a tall, fast-growing plant with hollow, woody stems that looks like a thick grass but grows as tall as a tree. It's one of the fastest-growing plants on Earth: some species can grow more than three feet in a single day, shooting up so quickly you could almost watch it happen.

Bamboo grows naturally in warm regions, especially across Asia, where it has been used for thousands of years to build houses, bridges, furniture, and scaffolding. Its stems are incredibly strong yet flexible, making them perfect for construction. People also use bamboo to make everything from paper and musical instruments to cutting boards and chopsticks.

Giant pandas depend almost entirely on bamboo for food, spending up to 14 hours a day munching through it. While the plant is tough and woody, pandas have special adaptations that help them digest it.

When you hear about something spreading like bamboo, it means growing or expanding rapidly. A bamboo curtain was once a term for the political barrier between communist China and the rest of the world, similar to how the Iron Curtain described the division in Europe.
