banister
The railing along stairs that you hold for support.
A banister is the handrail you grip when climbing or descending stairs. It runs along the side of a staircase, usually mounted on upright posts called balusters, and gives you something steady to hold onto so you don't lose your balance.
If you've ever walked down steep stairs while holding the railing, you were using a banister. In older homes, banisters are often made of polished wood that feels smooth under your hand. Modern buildings might have metal or glass banisters instead.
Libraries, museums, and grand old buildings often feature elaborate banisters with decorative carvings or elegant curves. In homes, kids sometimes slide down banisters (though adults usually prefer they don't!). Whether you're carrying laundry downstairs or heading up to bed, the banister is there to steady you, especially important for older people, young children, or anyone navigating stairs in the dark.
