barbell
A long bar with weights on both ends for lifting.
A barbell is a long metal bar with heavy weights attached to each end, used for strength training and weightlifting. The bar itself is usually around six feet long, and you can add or remove circular weight plates to make it heavier or lighter depending on how strong you are and what exercise you're doing.
Athletes use barbells for exercises like squats (where you rest the bar across your shoulders and bend your knees), bench presses (where you lie on your back and push the bar up), and deadlifts (where you lift the bar from the floor). The barbell is one of the most important tools in strength training because it lets you lift much heavier weights than you could with just dumbbells, and it forces both sides of your body to work together.
The design is simple but clever: the long bar keeps the weights balanced, and you grip it with both hands for control. Olympic weightlifters use barbells in competitions, trying to lift hundreds of pounds overhead. But beginners use them too, starting with just the empty bar or light weights to learn proper form. As you get stronger, you progressively add more weight to the ends.
