barely
Only just, almost not at all, by a tiny amount.
Barely means only just, by the smallest margin, or almost not at all. When you barely catch a bus, you make it with only seconds to spare, running up just as the doors are closing. When you barely pass a test, you get the minimum score needed, maybe 70 out of 100 when 69 would have been failing.
The word captures that narrow space between success and failure, between something happening and not happening. If you barely hear someone whisper across a quiet library, the sound reaches your ears, but just faintly. If you can barely lift a heavy box, you manage to get it off the ground, but it takes all your strength.
Sometimes barely suggests relief, like when a gymnast barely stays on the balance beam after a wobble. Other times it shows disappointment, like barely finishing half your homework before bedtime when you meant to complete it all. The word always means something happened, but with almost nothing to spare.
