barracks
Large buildings where many soldiers live and sleep together.
Barracks are large buildings where soldiers live together. Unlike regular houses or apartments, barracks are designed to house many service members in one place, usually with rows of beds in shared rooms. On a military base, you might see several barracks buildings lined up, each housing dozens or even hundreds of soldiers, sailors, or other military personnel.
Life in the barracks is different from home. Soldiers often share rooms with roommates, keep their belongings in lockers, and follow strict rules about cleanliness and organization. Everything runs on a schedule: wake-up times, meals, inspections, and lights out.
Barracks have existed for thousands of years, wherever armies needed to house their troops. Roman legions built barracks in their military camps. Today's barracks range from simple buildings with basic beds and bathrooms to modern facilities with gyms, internet access, and recreation rooms.
The word barracks can be singular or plural. You might say “the barracks is old” when talking about one building, or “the barracks are being renovated” when referring to multiple buildings on a base.
