bask
To relax and enjoy warm sunshine or attention.
To bask means to relax and enjoy pleasant warmth or attention. When a cat stretches out in a sunny window, soaking up the heat and looking perfectly content, that cat is basking in the sunlight. Lizards bask on warm rocks to raise their body temperature. After a cold swim, you might bask in the sunshine on the pool deck, letting the warmth sink into your skin.
The word also describes enjoying praise or success. When a pianist finishes a brilliant performance and smiles as the audience applauds, she's basking in the appreciation. After winning the spelling bee, you might bask in the glow of your achievement, savoring the congratulations from friends and family.
Basking suggests a relaxed, unhurried enjoyment. You don't bask quickly. You settle in and let the warmth or good feeling wash over you. A student who rushes past compliments from the teacher isn't basking, but one who pauses, smiles, and really takes in the encouragement is basking in that recognition.
