basketball
A team sport where players score by throwing a ball through hoops.
Basketball is a fast-paced team sport where players try to score points by throwing a ball through a raised hoop called a basket. Two teams of five players each move up and down a rectangular court, dribbling (bouncing) the ball, passing it to teammates, and shooting at a basket mounted ten feet high on a backboard at each end of the court. When the ball goes through the hoop, the team scores two points, or three points if shot from beyond a curved line called the three-point arc.
The game was invented in 1891 by James Naismith, a physical education teacher in Massachusetts who needed an indoor winter sport for his students. He literally nailed peach baskets to the walls of a gymnasium and created thirteen basic rules. The sport spread rapidly and became one of the world's most popular games.
Basketball requires a mix of skills: shooting accuracy, quick footwork, the ability to dribble without looking at the ball, and teamwork to create good scoring opportunities. Players develop an almost instinctive sense of where their teammates are on the court. A great basketball player doesn't just have individual talent, but knows exactly when to pass, when to shoot, and how to work with four other people as one coordinated unit. The game rewards both explosive athleticism and clever strategic thinking.
