bather
A person relaxing or playing in water, like at a beach.
A bather is someone who is swimming or bathing, especially at a beach, pool, or other body of water. When you see people splashing in the ocean on a sunny day, they're bathers. The word often appears in older books and signs: “Bathers should shower before entering the pool” or “The beach was crowded with bathers.”
The word can sound a bit formal or old-fashioned. Most people today would simply say “swimmers” instead. But bather captures something specific: the leisurely enjoyment of being in water, not necessarily swimming laps or racing. A bather might float on their back, wade in the shallows, or simply cool off in a lake on a hot afternoon.
You might also encounter the word in art history. Famous painters like Cézanne and Renoir created works called “The Bathers,” showing people relaxing by water. These paintings captured the peaceful, timeless quality of people enjoying themselves in nature, which is exactly what being a bather is all about.
