bathing suit
Clothing you wear for swimming or playing in water.
A bathing suit is clothing designed to be worn while swimming or spending time in water. The term covers everything from one-piece swimsuits to bikinis to swim trunks, all made from special fabrics that dry quickly and don't get heavy when wet.
Before bathing suits were invented in the 1800s, people either swam in their regular clothes (which became uncomfortably soggy) or avoided swimming altogether. Early bathing suits covered almost the entire body and looked quite different from what we wear today. Over time, as swimming became a popular sport and beach vacations grew common, bathing suits evolved to be lighter, more comfortable, and better suited for actual swimming.
The phrase bathing suit itself sounds a bit old-fashioned, like something your grandmother might say. Most people today just say swimsuit, and many kids simply call them swim trunks or a swimsuit. In some parts of the world, people use different terms entirely: Australians often say swimmers or togs, while British people might say swimming costume.
Whatever you call it, a bathing suit serves the same purpose: letting you move freely and comfortably in the water, whether you're doing laps in a pool, riding waves at the beach, or just splashing around with friends on a hot summer day.
