batsman
A cricket player who hits the ball with a bat.
A batsman is a player in cricket who uses a wooden bat to hit the ball bowled by the opposing team. The batsman stands in front of three vertical posts called wickets and tries to score runs by hitting the ball far enough to run back and forth between the wickets, or by hitting it to the boundary for automatic points.
Cricket is one of the world's most popular sports, played passionately in countries like England, India, Australia, and the West Indies. A skilled batsman needs quick reflexes, sharp eyes, and strategic thinking. The ball can come at speeds over 90 miles per hour, so batsmen wear protective gear including leg pads, gloves, and a helmet.
The batsman's job is both offensive and defensive: they must protect the wickets from being hit while also scoring runs for their team. Some batsmen are known for aggressive hitting, smashing the ball for boundaries. Others excel at patience and precision, carefully blocking dangerous deliveries while waiting for the right moment to attack.
In American baseball, the comparable player is called a batter, but the role is different. A cricket batsman might stay at the crease for hours, building a score through strategy and endurance, while a baseball batter gets just a few chances per game.
