batting
The act of hitting a ball with a bat in sports.
Batting is the act of hitting a ball with a bat, especially in baseball, cricket, or softball. When it's your turn to bat, you step up to home plate, grip the bat, and try to make solid contact with the pitched ball. Good batting requires timing, focus, and practice: you need to track the ball's speed and path, then swing at just the right moment to send it flying.
In baseball, a player's batting average shows how often they successfully get a hit. A .300 batting average means getting a hit three times out of every ten at-bats, which is considered excellent. Players spend hours in batting cages working on their swing, learning to recognize different pitches and adjust their technique.
The word can also describe taking turns at something. When your team is batting in kickball or Wiffle ball, you're the ones trying to score while the other team fields. In cricket, batters work in pairs, with one batting at each end of the pitch.
