being
A living person or creature that exists.
Being is existing or living. When you talk about a human being, you're talking about a person who exists in the world. When philosophers ask deep questions about being, they're wondering about existence itself: what does it mean to be alive and aware?
The word can describe any living creature. We often say “human being” to emphasize that we're talking about a person as a complete individual. A teacher is someone who teaches, and they're also a human being with feelings, dreams, and a life outside school. Animals are sometimes called “living beings” or “sentient beings” because they too exist and experience the world.
Being can also mean existing in a particular state or condition. When you say “I'm being careful,” you're describing how you are in that moment. If someone accuses you of being silly, they're talking about how you're acting right now. This kind of being is temporary: you're being quiet during the test, but you won't be quiet forever.
The phrase “for the time being” means “for now” or “temporarily.” If your family can't get a dog for the time being, it means not right now, but maybe later. You're accepting how things are in this moment while knowing they might change.
