bellhop
A hotel worker who carries guests’ bags and shows rooms.
A bellhop is a hotel employee who helps guests with their luggage and shows them to their rooms. When you arrive at a hotel, a bellhop might greet you at the entrance, load your suitcases onto a cart, and accompany you to your room while pointing out where the elevator, pool, or restaurant are located.
The name comes from the bell at the hotel's front desk. In traditional hotels, the desk clerk would ring a bell to summon a bellhop when guests needed help. Bellhops typically wear distinctive uniforms, sometimes with brass buttons and pillbox hats, making them easy to spot in a busy hotel lobby.
While many hotels still employ bellhops, some modern hotels have guests carry their own bags or use luggage carts. In hotels that have bellhops, guests often tip them for their service, usually a few dollars per bag. A good bellhop carries luggage, knows the hotel inside and out, and can answer questions about local restaurants, attractions, or how things work in the hotel.
