bemused
Confused in a mild, puzzled way about something odd.
Bemused means confused or puzzled, often in a mild way. When someone looks bemused, they have a slightly bewildered expression, as if they're trying to figure something out but can't quite make sense of it. A teacher might look bemused when a student gives an answer that's creative but totally unexpected, or you might feel bemused when you walk into class and everyone's laughing at an inside joke you missed.
The confusion that bemused describes isn't usually frustrating or upsetting. It's more like the puzzled feeling you get when something doesn't quite add up, or when a situation is odd or surprising in a way you didn't anticipate. If your friend starts speaking in riddles for no apparent reason, you might give them a bemused smile while you try to understand what they're up to.
Don't confuse bemused with amused, which means finding something funny or entertaining. The two words look similar, but they're quite different. Someone who's amused is enjoying themselves and probably smiling or laughing. Someone who's bemused is scratching their head, wondering what's going on.
