beverage
A drink, like water, juice, or soda.
A beverage is a drink. Water is the most common and most important beverage for human well-being. Milk, juice, soda, tea, coffee, lemonade, and hot chocolate are all popular beverages. It's simply a more formal way of saying “drink.”
You'll see the word beverage on restaurant menus, vending machines, and food labels. A sign might say “Food and Beverages” or “No outside beverages allowed.” When a flight attendant asks if you'd like a beverage, they're offering you something to drink.
While technically accurate, no one really says, “I'm thirsty, I need a beverage.” People say, “I need a drink,” or name what they want: “Can I have some juice?” The word beverage appears more in written contexts, formal settings, or when talking about drinks as a category. A grocery store has a beverage aisle. A company might manufacture beverages. A party host provides food and beverages for guests.
