blog
A website where someone regularly posts and shares their writing.
A blog is a website where someone regularly shares their thoughts, experiences, or expertise through posts that appear in reverse chronological order, meaning the newest entries show up first. The word comes from “web log,” originally describing online journals where people logged their daily thoughts, much like keeping a diary but publishing it for anyone to read.
Blogs can focus on almost anything: a marine biologist might blog about ocean discoveries, a baker might share recipes and techniques, or a student might document their travels. Some blogs feel personal and conversational, like reading letters from a friend. Others are more professional, teaching specific skills or analyzing news and events. Many newspapers and magazines now have blogs alongside their traditional articles, letting writers share timelier thoughts between major stories.
When you write entries for a blog, you're blogging. A person who blogs is called a blogger. Unlike a regular website that might stay mostly the same, a blog grows over time as new posts get added. Readers can often leave comments, creating conversations between the blogger and their audience. Some blogs become so popular that the blogger turns it into a career, but many people blog simply because they enjoy sharing ideas or connecting with others who care about the same topics.
