blossom
A flower on a tree or plant before fruit grows.
A blossom is a flower, especially one that appears on a fruit tree or other plant before the fruit develops. In spring, apple trees burst into clouds of pink and white blossoms, cherry trees display delicate blooms, and orange groves fill the air with the sweet scent of their blossoms. These flowers are beautiful and serve as the first step in creating fruit. Bees visit the blossoms, spreading pollen, and later those blossoms develop into apples, cherries, or oranges.
The word also means to develop and flourish, like a seed growing into a healthy plant. When someone blossoms, they grow into their full potential. A shy student might blossom into a confident public speaker after joining the debate team. A friendship can blossom when two people discover they share the same interests and values. Scientists talk about young minds blossoming as children learn and explore the world around them.
Notice how both meanings connect to growth and potential. Just as a tree's blossoms promise future fruit, a person blossoming shows promise of who they're becoming through effort and opportunity.
