blueprint
A detailed plan that shows how to build or do something.
A blueprint is a detailed plan or design that shows exactly how to build or create something. The word originally meant architectural drawings printed in white lines on blue paper, which is why they were called blueprints. An architect's blueprint shows where every wall, door, and window should go in a building, with precise measurements so construction workers know exactly what to build.
Today we use blueprint more broadly to mean any detailed plan for achieving something. A coach might create a blueprint for winning the championship, outlining specific strategies and training schedules. A teacher's blueprint for a successful school year might include lesson plans, classroom rules, and learning goals. When someone says “that's the blueprint for success,” they mean it's a proven plan that others can follow.
Just as builders need detailed instructions before they start construction, people often need a clear plan before tackling big projects. A good blueprint doesn't just say what you want to accomplish, it shows how to get there, step by step. Whether you're building a treehouse, planning a science fair project, or designing a new video game, starting with a blueprint helps ensure you don't forget anything important along the way.
