boat
A small vehicle that floats and moves on water.
A boat is a watercraft designed to float and carry people or cargo across water. Boats come in countless shapes and sizes, from small rowboats and sailboats to massive ocean liners and military vessels. What makes something a boat rather than a ship isn't always clear, but generally boats are smaller, and there's an old saying among sailors: “A ship can carry a boat, but a boat can't carry a ship.”
People have built boats for at least 10,000 years, making them one of humanity's oldest inventions. Early boats were simple hollowed-out logs or bundles of reeds tied together, but they opened up new worlds for fishing, trade, and exploration. Today's boats range from kayaks you paddle yourself to massive cargo vessels powered by engines.
The word also appears in common expressions. When people are “in the same boat,” they face the same problem together. When you “miss the boat,” you've lost an opportunity. And when someone tells you not to “rock the boat,” they're asking you not to cause trouble or upset the current situation. These phrases remind us how important boats have been to human life: they're both vehicles and part of how we understand working together and navigating challenges.
