bobber
A small float on a fishing line that shows fish bites.
A bobber is a floating device attached to a fishing line that signals when a fish bites. When you cast your line into the water, the bobber floats on the surface like a little buoy. If a fish nibbles at your bait below, the bobber suddenly dips, bobs, or gets pulled under, telling you it's time to reel in your catch.
Bobbers come in different shapes and sizes: round red-and-white ones are classic, but some are long and thin, while others look like little plastic eggs. They serve two purposes: they keep your bait at the right depth in the water, and they act as your eyes, showing you what's happening beneath the surface where you can't see.
Fishers also call bobbers “floats” or “corks.” Watching a bobber requires patience. You might stare at it for minutes while nothing happens, then suddenly it dances on the water and disappears, and your heart races as you grab the rod. That moment when the bobber goes under is what makes fishing exciting.
