boggy
Soft, very wet ground that feels squishy underfoot.
Boggy describes ground that's soft, wet, and spongy, like a waterlogged sponge under your feet. When you walk across boggy land, your shoes might sink slightly with each step, and water often squishes up around them. The ground feels unstable, as if it might give way.
You'll find boggy areas in wetlands, marshes, or anywhere water collects and saturates the soil. After several days of heavy rain, even a normal field can become boggy.
Hikers learn to spot boggy ground by looking for certain plants like moss and rushes that thrive in wet conditions, and by noticing where the ground looks darker or more lush. Walking through boggy terrain requires careful attention: what looks like solid ground might actually be a soggy patch that soaks your boots. In stories set in the English or Irish countryside, characters often struggle across boggy moors, where the treacherous ground adds danger to their journey.
