bomb
An explosive weapon that blows up and causes damage.
The word bomb has several meanings:
- An explosive weapon designed to cause destruction. A bomb contains materials that create a powerful explosion when triggered. Bombs have been used in wars throughout history, from simple gunpowder devices to sophisticated modern weapons. During World War II, cities built underground shelters where people could take cover during bombing raids. Today, bomb squads are specially trained teams that safely disable dangerous explosives.
- To fail spectacularly at something. When a comedian's jokes bomb, the audience sits in uncomfortable silence instead of laughing. A movie can bomb at the box office by selling very few tickets. A student might say their presentation bombed if they forgot their lines and fumbled through it. This informal meaning captures that sinking feeling when something you tried didn't work out at all.
- In certain contexts, something surprisingly excellent. You might hear someone say a meal was “the bomb” or that a party “bombed” (meaning it was amazing). This slang usage flips the destructive meaning into something positive and explosive in a good way, though it's becoming less common.
The contrast between these meanings shows how the same word can carry very different weights depending on context.
