bookmobile
A large vehicle that travels around lending library books.
A bookmobile is a large vehicle, usually a bus or truck, that has been converted into a mobile library. Inside, shelves line the walls holding hundreds of books that people can check out, just like at a regular library. The bookmobile drives to different neighborhoods, parks, and towns on a regular schedule, bringing books to people who might live far from a library building or have trouble getting there.
Bookmobiles became popular in the early 1900s when many rural communities had no libraries of their own. A librarian would drive the bookmobile along country roads, stopping at farms and small towns so families could borrow books. Children would wait excitedly for bookmobile day, rushing out when they heard it coming down the road.
Today, bookmobiles still serve remote areas, but they also visit schools, nursing homes, and community centers in cities. Some bookmobiles are equipped with computers and Wi-Fi, turning them into mobile learning centers. The idea is simple but powerful: if people can't easily get to books, bring the books to them. A bookmobile makes reading accessible to everyone, no matter where they live.
