boom
A loud, deep, explosive sound, like thunder or a cannon.
The word boom has several meanings:
- A loud, deep, explosive sound. Thunder booms across the sky during a storm. A cannon booms when it fires. The bass drum in a marching band creates a booming sound that you can feel in your chest. When a teacher's voice booms across the playground, everyone stops and listens.
- A period of rapid growth or success. During an economic boom, businesses expand, new jobs appear, and people feel optimistic about the future. A town might experience a population boom when many families move there at once. The California Gold Rush created a boom in San Francisco's growth. Industries can boom too: the video game industry has been booming for years.
- A long pole that extends from something. Sailboats have a boom that holds the bottom edge of the sail and swings across the boat when changing direction. Construction cranes use a boom to reach high places. Microphone booms hang above actors in movie scenes.
The exclamation “boom!” expresses sudden success or impact, like a magician shouting it after a trick, or someone saying, “I studied hard, took the test, and boom, I got an A!”
