booth
A small, partly enclosed space for a special purpose.
A booth is a small, enclosed space designed for a specific purpose. Picture the wooden stands at a fair where vendors sell crafts or food: each one is a booth. At a restaurant, a booth is a cozy seating area with a table between two benches, often with high backs that make your conversation feel more private.
Booths serve all kinds of purposes. A voting booth gives you privacy to mark your ballot during an election. A phone booth (now mostly seen in old movies) was a small glass room with a telephone inside. A photo booth takes your picture when you sit inside and press a button. At a trade show or convention, companies set up booths to display their products and talk with customers.
Whether you're sitting in a diner booth sharing French fries with a friend or stepping into a sound booth to record your voice, a booth creates a little world within a larger space, giving you room to focus on whatever you're there to do.
