bowl
A round, deep dish used for holding food or liquid.
The word bowl has several meanings:
- A round, deep dish used for holding food or liquid. You might eat cereal from a bowl at breakfast, or serve popcorn in a large bowl for movie night. Bowls can be made from ceramic, plastic, wood, or metal. The rounded shape helps contain liquids and makes it easy to scoop things out with a spoon.
- To roll a heavy ball down a lane toward pins in the sport of bowling. When you go bowling with friends, you take turns trying to knock down ten pins arranged in a triangle at the end of a long, smooth lane. Someone who bowls regularly is called a bowler.
- A large stadium or an important football game. The Rose Bowl is both the name of a famous stadium and an annual college football game played there. The Super Bowl is the championship game of professional football, watched by millions of people each year. These events are called bowls because early stadiums were built in natural bowl-shaped valleys, giving every seat a good view of the field.
