bricklayer
A worker who builds walls and structures using bricks and mortar.
A bricklayer is a skilled worker who builds walls, chimneys, patios, and other structures by carefully stacking bricks or concrete blocks and bonding them together with mortar (a thick paste made of cement, sand, and water). Bricklayers measure, cut, and place each brick precisely so the structure is level, straight, and strong enough to last for decades or even centuries.
Bricklaying requires both physical strength and careful attention to detail. A bricklayer must work methodically, checking constantly that each course (layer) of bricks is level and aligned. The mortar joints between bricks need to be the right thickness, and corners must be square. One mistake early on can throw off an entire wall.
The craft takes years to master. Apprentice bricklayers learn techniques like “buttering” (spreading mortar on a brick before placing it), creating different bond patterns (the way bricks overlap for strength), and building corners that can support the weight of upper floors. Many bricklayers take pride in their work, knowing that structures they build today might still be standing long after they're gone. When you see a beautiful brick building or a sturdy garden wall, you're looking at the careful work of a skilled bricklayer.
