broad
Wide or covering a large, general area or range.
When we describe something as broad, we mean it's wide or extends far from side to side. A broad river stretches wide across the land, making it hard to see the opposite shore. A football player might have broad shoulders that span wide across his frame. The broad side of a barn is its widest face, the one that makes the easiest target (which is why people say something is “as big as the broad side of a barn” when it's impossible to miss).
The word also describes ideas, interests, or categories that cover a lot of ground. A student with broad interests might love science, art, and sports equally. A teacher might give broad guidelines for a project instead of specific instructions, leaving room for creativity. When someone speaks in broad terms, they're discussing general ideas rather than specific details. A broad smile spreads wide across someone's face, showing genuine happiness.
The phrase in broad daylight means something happened openly, in full view, often when you'd expect people to hide what they're doing. If someone stole a bicycle in broad daylight, they did it right out in the open where everyone could see.
