brogue
A strong way of speaking that shows where someone is from.
- A strong regional accent, especially an Irish or Scottish one. When someone speaks with a brogue, their accent is thick enough that you immediately notice where they're from. You might hear a charming Irish brogue in movies set in Dublin, or a Scottish brogue that makes certain words sound quite different from American English. The word often carries a friendly feeling: saying someone has a brogue isn't an insult, it's just describing their distinctive way of speaking.
- A sturdy leather shoe with decorative holes punched in patterns across the surface. These shoes, originally from Scotland and Ireland, were designed for walking across wet ground: the holes let water drain out. Today, brogues are considered stylish dress shoes. The decorative perforations, called broguing, often form elegant patterns along the edges and toe. You might wear brogues to a fancy dinner or see them paired with a suit. The word can describe both men's and women's shoes in this style.
