brute
A cruel, rough person who uses strength instead of kindness.
A brute is someone who uses physical strength or violence instead of thought, kindness, or reason. If a bigger kid takes someone's lunch money by force rather than asking politely or earning money themselves, they're acting like a brute. The word suggests someone crude and unthinking who solves problems through raw power.
In stories and history, brutes are often the thugs or enforcers who rely on intimidation. They might be strong, but they lack the self-control to find better solutions. Think of Gaston from Beauty and the Beast, who uses his physical strength and aggression to get what he wants rather than treating others with respect.
The word can also describe things that are purely physical or forceful. Brute force means solving a problem through raw power rather than cleverness. If you can't figure out a puzzle, you might try every possible combination through brute force instead of looking for the pattern. A storm's brute strength describes its raw, overwhelming power.
Interestingly, despite the similar spelling, the Beast in Beauty and the Beast is actually the opposite of a brute: he learns to be gentle, thoughtful, and kind rather than relying on strength or anger.
