bug
A small insect or tiny creature that crawls or flies.
The word bug has several meanings:
- A small insect or similar creature. Many people call ants, beetles, and even spiders bugs, though scientists use more specific terms like “insect” or “arachnid.” When you find a ladybug on your arm or watch an ant carry a crumb, you're observing a bug. Some bugs fly, some crawl, and some can even walk on water.
- A mistake or flaw in a computer program. When software doesn't work right, programmers say it has a bug. They spend time debugging the code, tracking down what went wrong.
- A microorganism that causes illness. When someone says “I caught a bug,” they mean they got sick from a virus or bacteria. The flu bug, a stomach bug, or whatever bug is going around school are all examples. It's a casual way of talking about germs.
- To bother or annoy someone persistently. If your sister keeps asking “Are we there yet?” on a long car trip, she's bugging you. The word captures that irritating, insect-like persistence of someone who won't leave you alone.
