Building is the act of creating something by putting parts together, whether it's a physical structure, an organization, or even a skill. When construction workers build a house, they combine wood, bricks, and concrete into a home. When you build with LEGO bricks, you're connecting plastic pieces to create whatever you imagine.

The word also refers to the structure itself: a building is any roofed structure with walls, from a small garden shed to a towering skyscraper. Schools, libraries, offices, and apartments are all buildings.

But building goes beyond construction. You build friendships by spending time together and being trustworthy. Athletes build strength through regular training. Students build vocabulary by reading challenging books. A scientist might build on previous research, using earlier discoveries as a foundation for new ones.

The idea of building suggests patient, deliberate work over time. You don't build Rome in a day, as the saying goes. Whether you're building a tree fort, building confidence before a big performance, or building a collection of baseball cards, the process requires adding piece after piece, step after step, until you've created something that wasn't there before.
