bunk
Nonsense or silly talk that is not true.
The word bunk has several meanings:
- A narrow bed attached to a wall, often stacked one above another. On ships, in summer camps, and in small bedrooms, people sleep in bunk beds to save space. The top bunk might feel like an adventure, while the bottom bunk feels cozier and more protected. Sailors have slept in bunks for centuries, and today you'll find them in cabins, hostels, and anywhere space is limited.
- Nonsense or foolish talk that isn't true. When someone says “That's a bunch of bunk,” they mean the idea is ridiculous or false. If a friend claims they can fly by flapping their arms, you might respond, “That's complete bunk!” The related word debunk means to prove that something people believe is true is actually false. Scientists debunk myths, historians debunk legends, and skeptics debunk wild claims by showing evidence of what's really true.
