burial
The act of putting a dead body into the ground.
Burial is the act of placing a dead body in the ground, usually in a grave. When someone dies, their family and friends often hold a funeral service before the burial, gathering to remember the person and say goodbye. The burial itself happens at a cemetery, where workers have dug a hole deep enough to place a coffin containing the body.
Humans have practiced burial for thousands of years, and archaeologists have discovered ancient burial sites from cultures all around the world. Different societies develop different burial customs: some bury their dead with treasured possessions, some mark graves with elaborate monuments or simple stones, and some plant trees or flowers at the burial site. These practices show how people honor those who have died and keep their memory alive.
The word can also describe putting anything in the ground. A pirate might bury treasure on a remote island. A dog might bury a bone in the backyard. When something gets buried under piles of papers or toys, it means you can't find it anymore because it's completely covered up and hidden from view.
