bus
A large vehicle that carries many people on a route.
A bus is a large motor vehicle designed to carry many passengers along a fixed route or schedule. Most buses have rows of seats, wide aisles, and doors that open and close to let people on and off at designated stops. School buses transport students to and from school, while city buses help people travel around town without needing their own cars.
When buses first appeared in the 1820s, they were horse-drawn wagons that carried passengers for a small fare.
Bus can also work as a verb. Restaurant workers bus tables when they clear away dirty dishes and prepare the table for the next customers. A person who does this job is called a busser.
In computing, a bus is a system that transfers data between different parts of a computer, like a vehicle carrying information instead of people. Engineers chose this name because, just like a passenger bus stops at multiple locations, a computer bus connects to multiple components.
