buzz
A low, continuous humming sound, like a bee makes.
Buzz is a low, continuous humming or vibrating sound, like the noise a bee makes while flying or the sound of many people talking at once in a crowded room. An electric razor buzzes against your skin. A cell phone buzzes when it vibrates in your pocket. Fluorescent lights sometimes buzz faintly overhead.
The word also describes excited energy or attention around something. When a new movie creates buzz, people everywhere are talking about it, sharing opinions, and trying to convince their friends to see it. A school might have buzz about an upcoming field trip, with students chattering in hallways and speculating about what they'll see.
You can buzz someone by calling them quickly, or buzz around when you're moving energetically from task to task, like a bee visiting flowers. When you feel a buzz of excitement, you're experiencing that tingly, energized feeling before something good happens, like the moments before your birthday party starts or right before the curtain rises on a school play.
In slang, a buzz cut is an extremely short haircut that looks like it was done with electric clippers, leaving hair so short you can see the scalp.
