bye
A casual way to say goodbye when someone is leaving.
Bye is what you say when you're leaving or when someone else is leaving. It's short for “goodbye,” and it's the casual, everyday way people end conversations. You might say bye to your teacher at the end of class, to your friends when the bell rings, or to your parents when they drop you off at school.
The word feels light and simple, but it carries real meaning: it acknowledges the person you're talking to and signals that you'll see them again later. Some people stretch it into “byeee” when they're feeling extra friendly, or make it more formal by saying “goodbye” in serious situations.
Bye can also mean a free pass to the next round in a tournament. If there are an odd number of teams in a competition, one team gets a bye and automatically advances without playing. Getting a bye means you rest while others compete, which can be an advantage because you save your energy.
