Bye is what you say when you're leaving or when someone else is leaving. It's short for “goodbye,” and it's the casual, everyday way people end conversations. You might say bye to your teacher at the end of class, to your friends when the bell rings, or to your parents when they drop you off at school.

The word feels light and simple, but it carries real meaning: it acknowledges the person you're talking to and signals that you'll see them again later. Some people stretch it into “byeee” when they're feeling extra friendly, or make it more formal by saying “goodbye” in serious situations.
