calendar
A chart that shows days, weeks, months, and years.
A calendar is a system for organizing and keeping track of days, weeks, months, and years. When you look at a calendar hanging on the wall or check the calendar app on a phone, you're seeing a structured layout of time that helps you know what day it is, plan for upcoming events, and remember important dates.
Calendars solve a fundamental human problem: how to coordinate activities and keep track of the passage of time. Ancient civilizations developed calendars by observing patterns in nature, like the phases of the moon or the changing seasons. The calendar most of the world uses today, called the Gregorian calendar, organizes time into 365 days (366 in leap years), twelve months, and seven-day weeks.
People use calendars to mark birthdays, schedule appointments, plan vacations, and coordinate with others. Schools use academic calendars to organize the school year into terms and breaks. Without calendars, it would be nearly impossible to agree on when to meet, celebrate holidays, or accomplish long-term goals. When you calendar something (using the word as a verb), you're adding it to your calendar so you won't forget it.
