calla
An elegant, trumpet-shaped flower often used in weddings.
A calla is a type of elegant flower known for its distinctive trumpet-like shape and smooth, waxy appearance. The most common variety has a pure white petal that curves gracefully around a golden yellow center spike. While white callas are the most famous, they also come in pink, purple, yellow, and other colors.
Calla lilies (a common name) aren't actually true lilies at all, despite what their name suggests. They originally grew wild in southern Africa before becoming popular garden and decorative flowers around the world. Their clean, simple shape makes them a favorite for weddings and formal arrangements.
If you've seen a painting by Georgia O'Keeffe, the famous American artist, you might recognize calla lilies: she painted them many times, capturing their smooth curves and bold shapes in her distinctive style. These flowers grow from underground stems called rhizomes and prefer wet soil, which is why they often grow naturally near streams and marshes.
