camcorder
A portable camera that records both video and sound together.
A camcorder is a portable electronic device that records video and audio together, combining a video camera and a video recorder in one unit. The word itself blends “camera” and “recorder.”
Before camcorders became common in the 1980s, recording video required heavy, expensive equipment that only TV studios could afford. Camcorders changed everything by letting ordinary families capture birthdays, vacations, and everyday moments on videotape. Parents could film their children's first steps or school plays, creating home movies that could be watched on the family TV.
Early camcorders were bulky and recorded onto cassette tapes (like VHS or smaller formats). Over time they became smaller and lighter, eventually recording onto small tapes, then DVDs, then internal memory. By the 2010s, smartphones with built-in video cameras had largely replaced standalone camcorders for many people.
You might still see camcorders used by serious hobbyists or in situations where better video quality, longer recording times, or special features matter more than the convenience of a phone.
