A device that takes pictures by capturing light.
A camera is a device that captures images by recording light. When you press the button, the camera opens briefly to let light in, which creates a picture of whatever the camera is pointed at. That picture might be stored on film (in older cameras) or as digital information (in modern cameras).
Before cameras existed, the only way to preserve what something looked like was to paint or draw it, which took hours or days. The invention of the camera in the 1800s changed everything. Suddenly people could capture a moment in seconds: a family gathering, a historic event, a beautiful sunset. Photography became a powerful way to document reality, tell stories, and share experiences.
Today, cameras are everywhere. Most phones have cameras built in, making it easy to photograph almost anything. Professional photographers use larger cameras with special lenses for portraits, wildlife, or sports. Scientists use cameras to study everything from distant galaxies to tiny cells. Security cameras watch over buildings and streets to help keep people safe.
