camp
A place where people stay temporarily, usually in tents.
The word camp has several meanings:
- A place where people stay temporarily in tents or simple shelters, usually outdoors. When families go camping, they set up camp in a forest or by a lake. Summer camps give kids a chance to spend weeks swimming, hiking, and learning new skills away from home. Soldiers set up military camps during wartime.
- To stay somewhere temporarily, often outdoors. You might camp in the woods for a weekend or camp out in your backyard. The phrase camping out can also mean waiting somewhere for a long time, like when people camp out overnight to get tickets to a concert.
- A style that's so exaggerated or theatrical it becomes funny or entertaining. A movie might have campy special effects that look deliberately fake and over-the-top. When actors perform in a camp style, they're being dramatic in a way that's playfully excessive rather than serious. This meaning celebrates things that are bold, colorful, and don't take themselves too seriously.
