candelabra
A decorative stand that holds several candles at once.
A candelabra is a decorative stand that holds multiple candles, usually three or more. Unlike a simple candlestick that holds just one candle, a candelabra spreads several candles across branching arms, creating more light and a grander appearance.
Before electric lights were invented, candelabras were practical devices that helped light up large rooms in castles, churches, and wealthy homes. Today, people use them mostly for decoration or special occasions. You might see an elegant silver candelabra on a holiday dinner table, or an ornate candelabra holding five candles in a fancy restaurant.
Candelabras can be made from silver, brass, iron, or other materials, and they range from simple designs to incredibly ornate creations with curves, scrollwork, and artistic details. Some are small enough to fit on a bookshelf, while others stand several feet tall.
The plural can be either candelabras or candelabra. You might also hear the word candelabrum (can-duh-LAH-brum), which is the singular form, though candelabra is more common in everyday English.
