capitalization
Using capital letters at the start of important words.
Capitalization has two main meanings that connect in an interesting way:
- In writing, capitalization means using uppercase letters at the beginning of sentences, for names, and for important words in titles. You capitalize “Monday” because it's the name of a specific day, and “Texas” because it's the name of a place. When you write “I love my dog Biscuit,” you capitalize “I” and “Biscuit” but not “dog.” These rules help readers understand what's important and what things are called.
- In business and finance, capitalization means providing money to start or grow a company. When someone capitalizes a business, they invest funds so it can buy equipment, hire workers, and begin operating. A well-capitalized company has enough money to survive challenges and seize opportunities. You might hear that a startup needs better capitalization to expand its operations.
The connection? Both meanings involve making something stand out as important or giving it the resources to succeed. Just as capital letters mark words as significant, capital (money) gives a business what it needs to compete and grow.
