car pool
An arrangement where people share one car for trips.
A car pool (also written as carpool) is an arrangement where several people travel together in one car, usually to the same destination or along the same route. Instead of each person driving their own vehicle, they take turns being the driver or simply share rides together.
Many families organize car pools to get kids to school, sports practice, or music lessons. If you live near three classmates, your parents might arrange a car pool where one parent drives all four of you to school on Mondays, another drives on Tuesdays, and so on. This saves time, gas money, and reduces traffic around the school.
Adults use car pools too, especially for commuting to work. Coworkers who live in the same area might car pool together, which means fewer cars on the highway and lower costs for everyone involved. Some highways even have special carpool lanes (also called HOV lanes, for High Occupancy Vehicle) that only cars with multiple passengers can use, letting carpoolers travel faster during rush hour.
The verb form is to carpool: “Do you want to carpool to the game together?” Carpooling requires coordination and reliability. If it's your parent's turn to drive, everyone else is counting on them to show up on time.
