careless
Not paying enough attention, causing mistakes or problems.
To be careless means to act without paying attention or thinking about what might go wrong. A careless student might leave their homework on the kitchen table and not realize it until they're already at school. A careless driver might change lanes without checking their mirrors first.
Careless actions often lead to avoidable mistakes. When you rush through your math homework carelessly, you might add when you should subtract or miss an entire question. When someone handles a friend's belongings carelessly, they might drop or damage them, not because they meant to, but because they weren't being careful enough.
The word implies that someone could have prevented the problem by paying closer attention. There's a difference between an honest mistake and careless behavior. If you trip over a backpack someone left in the middle of the hallway, that's an accident. But if you're the one who left the backpack there without thinking about who might trip over it, that's careless.
Being careless occasionally is normal: everyone has moments of distraction. But habitual carelessness, when someone repeatedly fails to think ahead or pay attention, creates problems for themselves and others. The opposite of careless is careful, thoughtful, or attentive.
