carving
The art of cutting material to make a shape or design.
Carving is the art of cutting away material to create a shape or design. When you carve a pumpkin for Halloween, you're carefully cutting away pieces of the shell to make a face. Wood carvers use sharp tools called chisels to chip away at blocks of wood, slowly revealing a sculpture hidden inside. Stone carvers work the same way, removing tiny pieces until a statue emerges.
Think of carving a turkey at Thanksgiving: you're making careful cuts to separate the meat into servings. But artistic carving is different because you're creating something new rather than just dividing something up. A skilled carver might transform a plain piece of wood into an eagle with spread wings, or turn a block of marble into a human figure so lifelike it seems ready to move.
Carving requires patience and precision. Unlike drawing, where you can erase mistakes, carved-away material is gone forever. Every cut matters. Ice sculptors carve elaborate designs that sparkle but eventually melt. Ancient peoples carved images into cave walls that we can still see thousands of years later.
