cask
A large wooden barrel for storing and aging liquids.
A cask is a large wooden barrel used for storing liquids, especially wine, whiskey, or beer. Picture a rounded container made from curved wooden strips (called staves) held together by metal bands, with flat circular ends. Casks come in different sizes: some hold just a few gallons, while others can store hundreds of gallons of liquid.
The word appears in many classic adventure stories. In Treasure Island, sailors roll casks of rum aboard ship. You might also hear the phrase “wine from the cask,” meaning wine poured directly from the barrel rather than from a bottle.
While modern shipping often uses metal or plastic containers, traditional breweries and distilleries still rely on wooden casks because of how they enhance flavor. Each cask is like a kitchen, where chemistry and time work together to transform what's inside.
