chandelier
A fancy hanging light with many bulbs or candles.
A chandelier is an elegant lighting fixture that hangs from the ceiling and holds multiple lights, often arranged in decorative tiers or branches. Think of it as a fancy overhead lamp designed to light up a large room while also looking beautiful.
Traditional chandeliers feature dozens of dangling crystals that catch and scatter light, creating sparkles across walls and ceilings. You might see them in grand ballrooms, fancy hotels, or theaters, where they add drama and elegance to special spaces. The crystals work like tiny prisms, breaking light into rainbow colors that dance around the room.
Modern chandeliers come in many styles beyond crystal: some use colorful glass, twisted metal, or even geometric shapes. A family might hang a simple chandelier over their dining room table, while a mansion's entryway might feature a massive one hanging twenty feet high.
Before electricity, chandeliers held real candles, which servants had to light carefully with long poles. Cleaning and maintaining these candle-lit chandeliers was dangerous work. Today's electric chandeliers are much safer, but they still capture that same sense of grandeur that made them symbols of wealth and celebration for centuries.
